March Friendlies – 18A

What a great opportunity and learning experience in the month of March. We played each Saturday and Sunday against some of the top competition in the state at the Stars Friendlies in Lakewood. Playing up, in the 18A division was a good experience and gave us a great opportunity to see what we needed to work on. Thanks to Dan Burns and Dave Hayner for giving us the chance to be a part of a great format. We look forward to next year. The girls played well and were competitive in every game!

April 27th, 28th and 29th – Stampede Spring Training Weekend (Xtreme tournament)

STAMPEDE TAKES THE “SHIP”

The Stampede had an amazing weekend. We took off on Thursday night in our van and loaded trailer. We arrived in Grand Junction late that night, but with lot’s of energy! We had a 4 and ½ hour practice at the “field of dreams” on Friday morning and were able to accomplish a lot in the beautiful weather and the secluded private field. The girls were craving Chick-fil-a, so we headed there for lunch. After lunch, we took a tour of Mesa State College and met with the head softball coach, Kris Mort. She introduced the program and invited us to attend their practice that afternoon. The girls watched the Mavericks take infield and batting practice and saw that they could play college softball. We then went for pizza at Boston’s and closed down Banana’s amusement park that night. The coaching staff learned a lot at Banana’s. The girl’s true personalities came out on the car race track, laser tag, bumper boats, and bowling.

The 18A Xtreme tournament started early on Saturday morning. We finished 3-0 in pool play with some impressive performances. Saturday night we ate Mexican food at Dos Hombres and got a great night’s sleep. On Sunday we continued to play well and finished 6-0 on the weekend and took 1st place in the 18A division.

Kelly Unkrich was awarded the MVP of the tournament and Anna Carpinello received the “Big Stick” award for the top offensive player in the tournament. Congratulations ladies! It was well deserved. We had many outstanding individual performances this weekend and the girl’s have a lot to be proud of.

We will be able to look back on this weekend as a key to this year’s success. The girl’s really came together as friends, teammates and ferocious competitors. After falling behind 5-0 in the Championship game, they responded with 13 runs in the next two innings to take home the hardware. Congratulations Stampede!

STAMPEDE TAKE 3RD PLACE

The Stampede had another fun weekend in the Pony tournament. The weather was rotten, but we were able to play 8 games over the weekend. We took 3rd place after losing in the semi-final game against the PINK Styxx, 2-0. The game was well played by both teams in the freezing weather.

Once again, there was some great performances over the weekend.

The girls are really coming together and playing as a team. Every single player is a threat at the plate and our defense has been tremendous. Keep it up Ladies!

May 19th-20th, 2007 – Cardinals – Rocky Mountain Classic

The Stampede played well this weekend, but didn’t get the results we were looking for. We played in the 18A division this weekend and were eliminated early on Sunday by Dan Burn’s Stars Gold, 2-0. It was disappointing to run into these guys so early on Sunday, but it was a good experience facing one of the two Gold teams in the state. It will show when we hit the road in June and July. The pitching was outstanding this weekend! We did not give up an earned run all weekend. Opponents took advantage of a couple of errors to score their runs. Offensively, we weren’t striking out, we just couldn’t find enough holes to put up big numbers.

  • Stampede 5 vs. Wildfire Flames 0
  • Quicksilver 3 vs. Stampede 1
  • Stampede 1 vs. Ice 1
  • Stars/Burns 2 vs. Stampede 0

Next up…..Stazio in Boulder. We are back in the 16A division and look forward to some great competition from some talented teams. Our season really heats up now. We have some important things coming up and the girls are excited. At this point in the season, the Stampede are 20 – 6 and 2 ties, with the majority of games against 18A teams. Only 1 of the losses and 1 of the tie games came against 16A competition.

Keep it up girls. Your doing great!

June 1st, 2nd, and 3rd – ASA State Tournament

The Stampede played in the ASA State tourney this weekend, with hopes of qualifying for ASA Nationals in North Dakota. We played well, but came up a little short in the end. After going 3-0 and staying in the winners bracket, we lost a tight 2-1 game to the Quicksilver to send us to the loser’s bracket. We played the Comets/Sakamoto on Sunday morning and jumped to a 1-0 lead behind great pitching from Kelly Unkrich. The Comets battled the entire game and scored 4 runs in the last inning to beat us. Bad news, is we didn’t qualify for North Dakota. Good news, is that we qualified for Western Nationals in Sunnyvale, California.

  • Stampede 5 vs. Comets/Worth 4
  • Stampede 6 vs. Wildfire Flames 5

June 9th and 10th –Las Vegas, Nevada - Jo Classic

STAMPEDE TAKES 2 ND PLACE , GOING 5-1

What a weekend! We left on Thursday night for Vegas. On Friday, we hung out at the pool in the morning, playing beach volleyball most of the day. We then took a tour of the UNLV athletic facilities with current Rebel players. At 4:00pm we practice on the UNLV field and met with the coaches and players. It was very informative and gave the girls a great opportunity to see what it was like to step on a college softball field. All the players and families had dinner at the HardRock Café and were entertained by Stampede players, dancing on the tables to YMCA.

Pool play started on Saturday and we swept through without a loss and entered Sunday as the #1 seed from our pool. On Sunday, we beat a team from Hawaii to make it to the ship! We held a 3-0 lead after 4 innings, but the California Connexion played hard and beat us 4-3. 2nd place and going 5-1 was a great accomplishment, but it left the girls a little down. They are very competitive and love to win. It was extremely hot all weekend, but with the help of our moms, the girls stayed refreshed and focused. Monday was a day of fun. Several of the girls rode the roller coaster at NY/NY and toured the shark tank at Mandalay Bay. We stayed at the South Point hotel and it was awesome. Great weekend ladies. We are so proud of you and your accomplishments!

July 23rd – 28th – Triple Crown World Series – Park City, Utah

What a week we had! A perfect way to end a very successful season. We left on Saturday morning and traveled to Grand Junction for some extra practice time and fun. We stayed the night at the Holidome and the girls had some much needed “down time.” The trip over was very pleasant for the coaches, as the new Harry Potter book came out the night before we left and the van was dead silent. I thought we were going to have a riot when all 9 copies of the book “mysteriously” disappeared in Dillon when we stopped for lunch. On Sunday morning, we left for Salt Lake City, where we had a great practice at the Utah Baseball academy. That evening we headed for our “ranch” in Park City. This place was absolutely amazing. We had a huge, gated estate on over 70 acres of deer country. The ranch also had a nice guest house where 6 of the girls stayed. It was more like a sorority house for a week. The views were amazing and the hot tub was very busy. A highlight of the trip was the nightly campfires and passing around the ipod speakers for each player and coach to pick their favorite song. Waldo left her cell phone on the mountain somewhere and for 4 days she did not have access to a phone. Imagine that! Her social life took a major hit that week. We had some great parties and really enjoyed our time together. It sure put things in perspective, watching the girls have so much fun together.

I almost forgot…… we were there to play softball and that’s exactly what we did. We peaked at the perfect time and made a run at the ship. We finished undefeated and first in our pool. Won our first two bracket games and things were looking good. On Friday, we ran into a couple of awesome pitchers and lost two games to send us home. We finished 9th out of 54 top teams in the country. We are so proud of how the girls played together this year.

  • Stampede 9 vs. Fraser Valley Fusion 2
  • Stampede 8 vs. East Valley Pride 4
  • Stampede 2 vs. Payson, Ut. Sting 0
  • Stampede 8 vs. So. Cal. Commotion 1
